Mary Astor: Born Lucile Vasconcellos Langhanke, this actress went on to appear in some 123 motion pictures during her career. This actress's film credits include Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), The Palm Beach Story (1942), and the March girls' mother in Little Women (1949),
Humphrey Bogart: This actor appeared in more than seventy films before his death in 1957. This actor starred in films including Casablanca (1942), The African Queen (1951), and as Whip McCord in The Oklahoma Kid (1939).
Ward Bond: This actor's carreer spanned more than three decades. He appeared in seven of the films that have been listed by the American Film Institute as the 100 Greatest American Movies. This actor was featured as a Yankee captain in Gone with the Wind (1939), as a policeman in The Grapes of Wrath (1940), and a cop in It's a Wonderful Life (1946).
Elisha Cook Jr.: This actor started off in Vaudville theater, and went on act in numerous television shows, including "Star Trek," "Wild Wild West," "The Odd Couple," and "Batman." His film credits include the character Klipspringer in The Great Gatsby (1949), a landlord in Rosemary's Baby (1968), and the homeowner in House on Haunted Hill (1959).
Jerome Cowan: This actor also began in Vaudville theater and later transitioned to a variety of television shows. His acting credits include The Munsters, Rawhide, The Gnome-Mobile, The Twilight Zone: The Sixteen-Millimeter Shrine, and a district attorney in Miracle on 34th Street (1947), and an editor in The Fountainhead (1949).
Gladys George: As a child, this actress performed in a Vaudville act titled The Three Clares. She later moved up to Broadway, and then to film. Roles ranged from a noblewoman in Marie Antoinette (1938) to a speakeasy owner in The Roaring Twenties (1939). She also appeared with a fellow Maltese Falcon actor in Flamingo Road (1949).
Sydney Greenstreet: This actor took acting lessons for fun while managing a brewery. He started performing on stage, and later transitioned to film. This actor appeared as a bar owner in Casablanca (1942), and as an editor in Christmas in Connecticut (1945). He also appeared with a fellow Maltese Falcon actress in Flamingo Road (1949).
Peter Lorre: This Hungarian-born actor worked as a bank clerk, stage and movie actor in Germany for several years before fleeing the country when the Nazi's gained power. In America, his distinctive voice led to a successful career in radio, and he also worked with directors such as Alfred Hitchcock. His film career included roles in Arsnenic and Old Lace, (1944), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, (1954).
Barton MacLane: This actor was born on Dec. 25, but Santa Clause was not to be in his collection of film credits, because he was too popular as a bad guy. While perhaps best known for his role in I Dream of Jeannie (1965), this actor also performed in The Treasures of the Sierra Madre, (1948), Tarzan and the Amazons, (1945), and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941).
Lee Patrick: This versatile character actress's career spanned five decades, and she was considered a Warner Bros. stock actress. Her many film credits include The Doolins of Oklahoma (1949),Pillow Talk (1959), and Vertigo (1958). |
